Maria Antónia Pereira da Conceição
Área de
Actividade Científica: The area of scientific activity has
been tied up with parasitic diseases. Work have been done in
economic parasitic surverys in small ruminants in several
regional areas of Portugal. Some work was done in nematodes
evaluation in horses and risk factors. Dog parasites have been
studied, with special attention to Dirofilaria immitis and
Taenia sp. diagnosis. Parasitic zoonosis have been studied -
Trichinella sp., Echinococcus granulosus. Epidemiological
surveys have been carried for Echinococcus granulosus in several
regions of Portugal, either in dog or in intermediate hosts.
Fasciola hepatica epidemiological studies has been the main
scientific activity. New approach to diagnostic techniques have
been target of research.
Domínio de especialização: The domain of specialization
has been parasitic diseases, mainly fasciolosis, under
epidemiological point of view and strategic control programmes
design. Intermediate host habitats study and its identification
was done.
Actuais interesses de investigação: The present interests
of investigation are according the previous years: 1) parasitic
diseases; 2) epidemiological studies of F. hepatica,
Echinococcus granulosus and other helminthosis; 3) New
diagnostic techniques. Special interest in animal welfare work
Outras
competências/actividades: - Laboratorial experience -
field work (animal management, sampling faeces and blood...)
-Animal health and animal welfare. - Some bases in microbiology
(serological techniques and bacteriological ones). - Teaching. -
Poultry production.

Lic. Isabel
Maria Herder Costa
Área de
Actividade Científica: The work we have been developing is
mainly in animal nematode and trematode species (in various
regions of Portugal): bovine and small ruminant fasciolosis
(ELISA for anti-F.hepatica immunoglobulins, Simple sedimentation,
Ritchie and McMaster techniques, white blood counting and
haematocrit), ovine and goat gastrintestinal helminthosis in
general, ovine and goat coccidiosis and horse gastrintestinal
helminthosis (coprological techniques). However, F. hepatica
epidemiological studies has been the our main scientific
activity. New approach to diagnostic techniques have been target
of reserch. Dog parasites have also been studied, with special
attention to Dirofilaria immitis and Taenia sp. diagnosis, as
well as parasitic zoonosis namelly Trichinella sp. and
Echinococcus granulosus. We have also worked in microbiology of
goat milk (total counting and total and faecal coliform counting)
for the evaluation of milk microbiological quality.
Domínio de especialização: Meat inspection (cattle, goat,
ovine, pig, rabbit and chicken meat) in slaughterhouses (1995 to
2000). Since 1997, the main work developed is in goat
gastrointestinal helminthosis (PAMAF 3043) and bovine and small
ruminant fasciolosis (PRAXIS XXI and AGRO 6). Goat milk
microbiological quality was evaluated during the project PAMAF
3043 and the subject to the thesis of my last graduation.
Actuais interesses de investigação: The main interests of
research in the present are ovine and bovine fasciolosis (continuation
of the work we have been developing). More recently, we have
been studing zoonosis like Trichinella sp. and Echinococcus
granulosus, and dog parasites (Dirofilaria immitis and Taenia sp.)
Outras
competências/actividades: Laboratory work: preparation
of culture mediums for microbiological purposes, microbiological
analysis of water, milk, cheese and other food (pastry products,
meat products, etc); parasitological analysis of Leishmaniosis
in dogs (IFI), mites of dogs and farm animals and other blood
analysis (white blood counting, haematocrit and observation of
blood smears for haemoparasites). Field work: sample collecting
(faeces, blood, milk, water) and farmers inquiries.
